Balancing Stones and Bridges: What Do They Have in Common?

Growing up in Zimbabwe, I was always fascinated by the balancing rocks of Matopos.
At first glance, they appear to defy logic. Massive stones resting upon one another, somehow remaining upright through wind, rain, and time.
As a child, I saw rocks.
As a psychologist, I see something else.
I see connection.
No stone stands entirely alone.
Each draws stability from the stones beneath it and contributes to the balance of the stones above it.
The formation survives not because any one stone is strong enough on its own, but because they are connected.
Over the years, working with families, schools, organisations, and communities, I have often found myself returning to this image.
Bridges teach us a similar lesson.
They exist because something needs to be connected.
Perhaps the same is true of people.
Families.
Schools.
Organisations.
Communities.
We all draw strength from somewhere.
The question is:
What is your source?
And how are you helping to strengthen the people, relationships, and communities around you?
This is the first in a series of reflections inspired by the balancing stones of Matopos, Zimbabwe, and how they have shaped my thinking about psychology, leadership, relationships, and human connection.
