I asked ChatGPT to create case scenarios of organisations from the different stages of the Six Stages Framework in terms of understanding and dealing with racism.

Updated: Dec 28, 2023

Where is your organisation in its journey? What kind of progress are you making in your journey?

Can you recognise your organisation in the descriptions below?

I work with organisations to help them assess their starting points in the area of DEI and antiracism practice. Then using the Six Stages Framework toolkit, I help them set goals and progress to the next stage in their journey.

Attached is one organisation's assessment of where they are in their understanding and ability to deal with discriminations in general. The data was generated at a training event made up of senior leaders and employees.

What would your employees say if we were to ask the same question?

So, I asked ChatGPT to create case scenarios for organisations at the different stages of the Six Stages Framework in terms of understanding and dealing with racism. I entered the descriptors of the Stages and here are the profiles generated.

I even asked it to generate a post and hashtags- see below!!

ChatGPT said:

Certainly! Let's create case scenarios for organizations at each stage of the Six Stages Framework:

Stage 1: Unaware with Silence and Denial

Organization: XYZ Corporation

XYZ Corporation operates in a industry where diversity and inclusion have traditionally not been prioritized. The company leadership is largely unaware of racial equity issues, and there is a culture of silence and denial when it comes to discussing racism. Diversity training and inclusion initiatives are virtually nonexistent, and there is a lack of awareness about the need for change.

Stage 2: Dismissive and Avoidant

Organization: ABC Tech Solutions

ABC Tech Solutions, a mid-sized tech company, acknowledges diversity and inclusion as important but tends to dismiss race-related issues as less critical than other concerns. Leadership believes that their industry is inherently meritocratic, leading to an avoidance of uncomfortable conversations about racial inequities. The company may occasionally engage in diversity initiatives but is not fully committed to addressing racial injustices.

Stage 3: Becoming Aware of Issues of Race

Organization: Innovate Consulting

Innovate Consulting, a consulting firm, is in the early stages of recognizing racial disparities within its workforce and industry. Conversations around race are becoming more frequent, but the organization is still navigating how to address these issues effectively. There is a genuine interest in learning and raising awareness, with some employees expressing a desire to understand and contribute to positive change.

Stage 4: Open to Learning

Organization: Global Services Agency

Global Services Agency has actively embraced the need for education and self-reflection regarding racial equity. The organization invests in comprehensive diversity training programs, resources, and workshops. Leadership is open to learning and encourages employees at all levels to explore their biases, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement. The organization actively seeks out feedback and is committed to addressing any unconscious biases.

Stage 5: Ability to See the Bigger Picture

Organization: Sustainable Solutions Inc.

Sustainable Solutions Inc., a sustainability-focused company, has reached a stage where it can see the broader context of racial injustice. The organization understands that racial equity is interconnected with broader social issues. Leadership actively engages in conversations about systemic change, collaborates with external organizations, and takes a stance against racism not just within the workplace but in the broader community. The company is committed to being a positive force for change.

Stage 6: Leadership Qualities

Organization: Inclusive Innovations

Inclusive Innovations, a forward-thinking tech start-up, has developed leadership qualities in promoting racial equity, inclusion, and social justice. The organization actively assumes leadership roles in industry-wide initiatives to combat systemic racism. It collaborates with other organizations, supports community engagement, and actively challenges racism in all its forms. Inclusive Innovations is recognized as a leader in fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion, both within the company and the broader industry.
