The Asymptomatic Racists-If Racism Was A Virus…

Updated: Mar 13

See link for the article "If Racism was a Virus..." below

Check out this Instagram reel which Ekua Cant sent to me. This guy’s description would fall within the ‘asymptomatic group’ described within my recent article ‘if racism was a virus’.

I have provided an extract below of my article, but do check out the full article and let me know what you think. The link is at the bottom of this post.

“In virology terms the asymptomatic people are people who carry the virus but don’t express any obvious symptoms and they are the group that spread and foster low key racist views/ ideas/attitudes and they don’t really understand or recognise that they have them. So, in the main, they can pass them on to other people but through ignorance and not knowing any better. They can pass them on to other people through casual conversation and unfortunately sometimes they can go undetected.

The author would argue that it is these groundswell of views that can help racism spread because these asymptomatic people won’t confront people who are openly racist because they themselves harbour some minor racist views. So, they think “Oh well it’s a bit more than what I would say or do but I kind of understand where they’re coming from.” If challenged they will claim that they thought it was just banter and they didn’t think the people spreading these views was serious.”

The second group of asymptomatic people are those people where they may have some beliefs that they are trying to hide. They know that saying certain things is a bad thing (and not accepted by society) and so they just don’t say it openly. They try and hide it and they only say it to a close group of friends who think and behave in the same way that they do. Some of them don’t really understand that they are racist, and they wouldn’t accept that they’re racist. However some do understand they are racist and they hide behind “masks of tolerance.” (M’gadzah, 2023)
